Camp: Empathy
Camp: Empathy is designed to encourage empathy in your child through workshops, project-based learning, and volunteering. To begin each week, we will focus on the values and rewards of compassion, giving, and volunteering. Tuesday through Thursday, the campers will volunteer some time for local charities whose missions are important, and whose work affects us all. And on Friday, the campers will celebrate their success with a small ceremony and portfolio of achievement outlining their contributions for the week.
We promise ‘sun, fun, and philanthropy’ for children aged 9-13. In fact, our deal is this: If you send us your child (video games not included!) for a week or more, we’ll send you back a conscientious leader of social change!
A sampling of our themed weeks are as follows:
Kids Helping Kids
Sometimes the best kind of help is the help we give our peers. That’s why this week we’re going to help kids who are just like you! We’ll discuss important issues like bullying, fair play and being great role models. We will spend some time with organizations that provide important services for youth. Our team building activities will promote teamwork, conflict resolution, and problem solving with other campers.
Celebrating our Differences
There are so many reasons to celebrate our differences. Halifax is a very multicultural city, and we will show you a ton of ways to celebrate that fact. From folk songs, dance, food festivals, arts and crafts, mini museums, culture sharing, and discussing human rights. Bringing together all the colors of the world in one great place!
Kids Caring for Critters
People aren’t the only ones who suffer in this great big world-animals do too! Sometimes all they need is a little help from us… you know, a little TLC. This week we’ll learn what we can do to safely help our fourlegged, winged or aquatic friends by volunteering for animal-based charities! Also, watch out for an animal-themed craft this week!
Creating Social Justice
What does social justice mean to you? This week we will promote empathy by encouraging a conscientious outlook, because everyone deserves the same rights, right? Working toward creating a world of unity and fairness for all, we will volunteer and help support organizations which provide services that promote a just society.
Kids in the Community
Want to know what you can do to save the environment? There are lots of ways! Being young doesn’t mean you can’t help! In fact, being young means there are tons of neat ways to get involved! This week, we will talk about the importance of being ‘green.’ We’ll learn to take recycling, reducing, and reusing to a new level, and we will even go on a litter patrol in our area!
